5 Steps to Organizing

Hi! I’m Melissa. I’m a home organizer. I run this great company, Sunflower Life Organizing, and help people understand how their brain works, especially with ADHD, Autism or other neurodivergence, and create systems for people and families so they can share space.

I know what you’re thinking. “I don’t need an organizer! Why would anyone need an organizer? I know where everything goes, and I always put it back where it belongs. Anyone who can’t is just lazy. “

Good for you. You are also wrong. Some people intuitively understand organizing, and do it all the time. Some people learned from a young age that this is how you do it. Some people have systems that work well for them, but don’t work well for others. And some people’s parents got overwhelmed with the mess and threatened to use the snow shovel and the giant garbage can to “clean up” and get rid of all of the offending clutter( only me? ok).

All that to say that while YOU maybe don’t need an organizer, many people do. and I am here to walk anyone through that whole process that needs the help.

I first want to say, if you are struggling to keep things organized, you are not alone. There are many people who struggle to get or stay organized. It is not a moral failing. You’re not a bad person if you can’t organize. Not everyone is good at calculus, or writing, or chewing gum while walking up the stairs. My approach focuses most on what you CAN do, and making systems that YOU can manage.

The idea behind organizing is simple, but not always easy. You start with a space. Any space. Start small, so you don’t get overwhelmed. instead of the whole kitchen try one drawer or cupboard.

Step 1. Pull EVERYTHING out. I mean everything. We want to touch, and feel and know what to keep and what not to keep.

Step 2. Go through everything. You can Marie Kondo it, and decide if everything sparks joy. You can be practical, “I haven’t used this in a year” is just as good of of a reason to get rid of it. You can remember how Grandma used this spoon when she taught you how to bake cookies, and still get rid of it, if it’s not what you want to use.

Step 3. Sort it! Stuff to keep in this space, stuff that stay’s in the house, but not this space, stuff to return to someone, or donate, and stuff to throw away.

Step 4. Put it back, in whatever order makes most sense for you! Do you file papers by what they are, or when you’ll need them again. Do you sort utensils by color or use? If you need some help, I’m here, mostly I think the BEST systems are the ones that work for YOU!

Step 5. Enjoy your new organized space!

See? Simple: Just 5 steps. But it’s not always easy. If you get caught up and need some help, reach out, we’re always here to support you!

You can do this! We can help!
